TikTok marketing strategy for small business

5 min read · Updated October 19, 2026

A TikTok strategy for a small business does not need to be complicated. It needs to answer four questions.

1. Who is the buyer, and what do they ask?

Write down the three questions your customers ask before they buy. These become the topics for videos and the replies you give in comment threads.

2. Where do they already talk?

Search your niche on TikTok and note the videos with active threads. Many of the best conversations are under other people's videos, not your own.

3. What is your next step?

Decide what you want someone to do after they see you: search your brand name, visit your profile, or go to a page. Keep it to one thing.

4. How will you measure it?

Track a few numbers weekly: views, profile visits, branded searches and, if you have a tracked link, sessions and sales. Engagement rate helps you compare videos (see engagement rate benchmarks).

Budget

Pick a monthly budget and split it between making content, creators or ads, and comment presence. For perspective, ads cost about $8 per 1,000 impressions (TrendTrack), and young shoppers say they trust a regular person's recommendation more than a brand ad (YPulse).

Keep it up for 90 days

Run the same plan for three months before judging it. Short tests rarely show the pattern.
